The vibrant retelling of the central Greek myths by acclaimed novelist John Spurling, author of The Ten Thousand Things, winner of the 2015 Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction.
The classical Greek intellectual tradition pervades nearly every aspect of our modern Western civilization. Our logic and science, our philosophy, politics, literature, architecture, and art are all indebted to the ancient inhabitants of the small mountainous Mediterranean country. And the powerful myths of the Greeks, refined by Homer, Hesiod, Herodotus, and the great Greek dramatists, still resonate at the core of our culture.
Taking as his starting point many of the famous tourist sites in the Peloponnese, where the stories are set, John Spurling freshly imagines key narratives from the Greek canon, including tales of the doomed house of Atreus (notably Agamemnon, leader of the Greeks at Troy, murdered by his wife in his palace bathroom) and of the god Apollo; the goddess Athene; Theseus, scourge of the Minotaur; the Twelve Labors of Heracles; and Perseus, rescuer of Andromeda.
In this vibrant, gripping, and often grisly retelling of the Greek myths, stories of murder, power, revenge, love, and traumatic family relationships are made new again for our time with wit and relish by a gifted author. Spurling has added scene, dialogue, and context while always staying true to the spirit of the original myth.

Arcadian Nights The Greek Myths Reimagined (Audible Audio Edition) John Lee John Spurling Inc Blackstone Audio Books Reviews
I loved this book. I have known these tales since childhood, but Spurling gives them a human touch with humor and rich color worthy of Homer himself. A bit raunchy for the under twelve set, but today's children hear worse on facebook.
BTW, I share the first reviewer's frustration with the names. One is presented with endless versions, Ancient or modern Greek, Latin, English (the worst) plus operatic Italian, German and French. Just pick the pronunciation you prefer, and enjoy!
The book Arcadian Nights written by John Spurling is a collection of stories from Greek Mythology, but retold with a lot of creativity and imagination mixed in. Spurling keeps the storylines and characters intact from the old tales but he adds tons of details into his versions that aren't in the originals. Details such as locations and movement are documented in many of the stories and using the map that is printed inside the front and back cover of the book I was able to follow the action easily. I found myself referencing it often and soon enough I didn't need to look at it as much. I actually could picture where the action was. It made me feel like I may finally understand this Mythology stuff, but alas, I struggled with all the characters names.
The names of characters have always been tough for me because they are so darned hard to pronounce and even read. Maybe it's just me. There is a glossary of all the characters at the back of the book which helped me quite a bit. It tells who is who and how they are related to each other. My eyes would gloss over when I'd see a new name pop up and I'd have to stop and look it up. This made it tough for me to stay in the story. This is by no means the fault of the author. I take full responsibility. Long ago and far away in a galaxy far, far away, when I was in high school I saw fellow students grasp Mythology easily. I didn't and guess I never will.
The stories are pretty cool though and Spurling does a great job of telling them. For me if the characters were named Bob, Cindy, Harold and Sally instead of Lykomedes, Hyperboreans, Bellerophon and Polydeukes I might have a fighting chance of following along better. He took a tough subject and added some flair to it indeed and I admire a man who can do that. I raise a glass of Ambrosia to you my friend.
If you enjoy, study or just plain understand Greek Mythology you will love “Arcadian Nights”. This book is for you. It reads like a historical fiction novel but with all your favorite or not so favorite Greek Mythology characters. It adds another dimension to stories that may be familiar to many. I would love to sit in on a debate over mythological stories and characters at a library sometime. Just kidding. A book that is not for everyone but a book that will surely be enjoyed by many.
